What the source reports

India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation reports an unemployment rate of 5.0% for people aged fifteen and over in September 2026 under the Current Weekly Status approach. The rate was unchanged from August and 0.2 percentage points below September 2025.

Overall labour-force participation was 55.5%. Urban participation increased from 50.4% in August to 50.7% in September. The release combines national, rural, urban and gender breakdowns; those distinctions matter when interpreting the headline.

What this does not tell us

This is a population survey, not a count of technology-sector vacancies. The headline cannot tell an individual applicant how competitive a particular role will be, and it does not attribute job changes to AI.

Bring it back to your working life

A stable national figure can coexist with a difficult personal search. When discussing the market, describe your role family and the stage where progress stops, while leaving identifying workplace details out. Peers may be able to suggest a different application route or clarify what they are seeing. Keep the national statistics and individual experiences visible as different kinds of information.
